The Conservancy is sponsoring a Nature Photography Class with professional photographer, Jan Lightfoot, just in time to enter the 2024 Photo Contest.

Take awesome nature and wildlife photos by learning how the pros consider composition, camera settings, wildlife ethics, best times to photograph… and more!

Whether you’re using your phone or your DLSR camera, Jan can help you bring out the best in your Nature Photography.

Teens, adults and professionals are all welcome!

The class begins indoors (at the old barn) with a presentation, then moves out to the Nature Preserve for hands-on practice.

Class size is limited to 20 so Jan can work with each person, so be sure to reserve your place by registering below.

Jan Lightfoot

From the fourth grade, with her Brownie camera, Jan has been involved with photography in one form or another. Transitioning from her own darkroom in high school, she joined the Idaho Statesman newspaper photography staff, and also worked in custom color printing labs both in Idaho and California. She eventually became a Certified Photographic Counselor through the Photographic Marketing Association while managing Wentling’s Camera in Walnut Creek, CA.

In 2012, Jan had her first solo gallery showing at Viewpoint Photographic Gallery in Sacramento, CA and continues to show her work in various galleries throughout Northern California. In 2014, she began judging for clubs and venues throughout the United States.

She’s presented a variety of photographic programs to local clubs in the Northern California area and has received numerous awards through competitions and juried shows. In 2021, Jan was honored to receive NANPA’s Showcase award for First Runner Up in Altered Reality. In 2022, she was a recipient of KVIE’s Juror’s Award and has been a presenter at N4C’s FotoClave in 2019 and 2023. She served as the Chairperson for the PSA North American International Exhibition from 2016 to 2022.

Over the years, Jan has discovered that the concept of “less is more” is what she likes most in her own photography. Her goal is to make images that resonate with the viewer in a way that stirs the imagination. She strives to find the essence of a subject; a gesture, or a nuance that is not always obvious.

All these photos were taken by Jan Lightfoot at the Nature Preserve.

How to prepare and what to bring

For the most comfort and safety, wear weather-appropriate clothing for the season, and comfortable, close-toed walking shoes. You might also want to wear a hat and/or sunglasses, sunscreen and bug repellant.

Bring your own water and snacks, and don’t forget your camera!

Since we’ll be going off the ‘beaten track’, you’ll need to sign a waiver. You can download the waiver (PDF) and bring it in, or we will have them when you arrive.

We will gather in the old barn at 10 AM.
