On Wednesday, December 28, you can be a part of local natural history.

The first Yolo Christmas Bird Count, approved by the Audubon Society and sponsored by the Cache Creek Conservancy, will take place. Teams of citizen scientists (basically, anyone interested) will participate in a day of organized nature walks and bird tallying. Each team will be led by experienced birders familiar with the area and local birds.

The count circle is 15 miles in diameter and encompasses Woodland, much of Davis, and includes important habitats such as Cache Creek Nature Preserve, Woodland Wastewater Treatment Plant, North Davis Pond, West Davis Pond, UC Davis Arboretum, Conaway Ranch, Putah Creek Riparian Reserve, and Woodland Regional Park.

All levels of birders, from novice to experienced, are enthusiastically welcomed and encouraged to participate. Count teams will start in the morning and usually continue until the afternoon. You should bring appropriate clothing, snacks, and a pair of binoculars.

Interested birders should contact Bruce Christensen ([email protected]) for more information.
