We are excited to have YoloSol Collective bring Christina Almendariz to teach people about Tule at the Tending & Gathering Garden this summer and fall.
Hands on learning with Tlaka
The water grass, Tule, or Tlaka in Wintun, is fundamental to watershed health, to all kinds of wildlife, and is used to make baskets, housing, tools and even boats!
Christina Almendariz (Maidu/Wintun/Hupa/Yurok)
Christina will be teaching people
- the importance of tule in our wetlands,
- best gathering practices,
- traditional uses of Tlaka,
- care of environment and
- how to make Tlaka/PahtPaht mats for the wetlands.
When are the Workshops?
Workshops will be held on the 3rd Sunday of the month from April thru September, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
- April 21, 2024 – Cordage
- May 19, 2024 – Dolls
- June 16, 2024 – Skirts
- July 21, 2024 – Mats
- August 18, 2024 – Baskets
- September 15, 2024 – Boats with Special Hosts Diana Almendariz and Ooti Maxine
Class size is very limited and is being offered to youth groups and Native communities first.
Christina will be teaching us traditional knowledge that takes years of apprenticeship with the right teacher to master, so we ask that students not take videos or try to teach or change what you learn. Photos are okay so you can tell your friends and family how important this work is. Thank you!
How to prepare for the Workshops?
These workshops are not ‘done for you’ crafting classes. They are meant to be an immersion into California Native lifestyle. You will sometimes be going into the brush to gather what’s needed. If you have wading boots and/or gloves, bring them for a more realistic experience.
This time of year, you will need to check yourself for ticks. You might also want to wear a hat and/or sunglasses.
For the most comfort and safety, wear weather-appropriate clothing for the season, and comfortable, close-toed walking shoes.
Look for the sign-in table at north of the parking lot.
Registration
Class sizes are limited to 25 people.
