2024 Woodland-Davis Christmas Bird Count

December 27th, 2024

We welcome all interested birders, from beginners to advanced. We also have an area of the count dedicated to special needs birders including those requiring wheelchair access and for blind birders interested in birding-by-ear.

The Woodland/Davis Christmas Bird Count began with a Big Day count in January 2022 and then officially in December 2022. The count circle includes the city of Woodland and most of the city of Davis. Our count offers important insight into the interaction between humans and nature with urban, suburban, rural, and agricultural components throughout.

Many different habitats are encompassed in the count circle including: downtown business districts, city parks, neighborhoods, two golf courses, two cemeteries, a wastewater treatment plant, two riparian corridors, two nature parks, rice fields, almond orchards, rotating agricultural fields, two airfields, and properties reclaimed from aggregate mining in various stages of restoration.

Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is fun and easy to join, but you must first coordinate with the designated circle Compiler. If you are interested in participating in this year’s bird count, please reach out to the Woodland-Davis Compiler: Bruce Christensen at [email protected]

Bruce Christensen, a veterinarian with a background in wildlife biology, has been a resident of Yolo County since 2012 and lives in Woodland. He has loved birdwatching since he was a kid in Boy Scouts.

He serves on the Cache Creek Conservancy Board of Directors and is a member of Yolo Audubon Society.
